TITANS PREVAIL AT LA SERNA

LIGHT THE TORCH! The Titans are back. With their backs against the wall, Pioneer defeated No. 5 ranked La Serna, 37-21, to force the DRL into a three-way tie for third and a potential automatic play-off spot in CIF. We're having a party out here in Florida. Great job, coaches and team. Pioneer is now 6-4 on the year and deserving of the automatic spot or the At-Large spot at the very least. We will anxiously await the Del Rio Leagues decision.

· The 07 Titans got off to a strong start, running over Gabrielino 42-0 announcing that Pioneer would be a team to be reconned with in the DRL and Southeast Division.

· Week two brought more of the same determination as Pioneer stopped Ontario 21-7, displaying a formidable defense.

· Hosting South El Monte, in week three, the Titans ran their record to 3-0 with a decisive 29-14 victory.

· Again a strong defense dominated as the Titan scored 34 to shutdown Gladstone 34-0 and accent their arrival in 2007.

· They say success sets up a hard fall. Pioneer experienced that fall as Cypress stopped their unbeaten streak for the second year in a row. This time the score was Titans 20, Cypress 24. Pioneer is 4-1 after five weeks.

· Week six brings the start of DRL play. Pioneer draws unbeaten California at home. It's homecoming week. But the celebration is short-lived as the Condors give Pioneer a reality check... Titans lose their second in a row, 9-40. De Javu?

· Unable to find the breakdown in a team that held much promise just a few short weeks ago, the Titans returned home from Cal stadium licking their wounds as the Whittier Cardinals handed them loss number three. The 16-38 defeat dropped Pioneer to 4-3 and 0-2 in league play.

· Week eight. Pioneer takes to Titan field to host Santa Fe. The Chiefs have had their own troubling season and were looking for a win against the Titans to reverse their fortunes. Santa Fe did just that, handing Pioneer loss number four, 22-35, in a hard fought game. For the Titans it's beginning to look like a tale of two seasons, again, wrapped up in one year.

· Pioneer 31, El Rancho 28. It was a tough win, but it was also a good win. After four weeks of losing, any win is a good win. But this win was especially satisfying. At El Rancho. The Don's homecoming. The growing rivary between Pioneer and El Rancho make it almost as sweet as beating Santa Fe. More importantly, the Titan's W carries with it some important implications. First, the win makes Pioneer 5-4 overall. Second, it gives them an important DRL win and sets up a potential scenario that would advance the Titans to CIF playoffs. Read my blog on the DRL website to find out how.

Webmaster Note:

As a Pioneer alumnus and diehard Titan fan it's difficult to be critical of Pioneer's football program. Under the instruction of Head Coach Ramon Juarez, these kids work hard, year in and year out. They have had some successes, including the 1998 Del Rio League title, and some promising teams in the early 2000's. But, putting my bias aside, I can't help but wonder what it is that cases the Titans to disinegrate so often.

Getting off to a fast start and then coming apart at the seams is not something new at Pioneer. Set aside the three years, out of forty-eight that the Titans won a League title and you'll find a truckload of years when Pioneer let the big ones get away. Dating back to the Suburban League of the 60's and the Whitmont of the 70's, 80's and early 90's and the story is the same. It's like the seasons are split in two and different Titan teams show up to play each half season. Color me confused.

I'm three thousand miles away. That makes it difficult to attend Titan games. But on game night I order my pizza, break out the snacks, ice up my Mountain Dew, connect to the Internet and follow the game with the help of local Whittier area friends. It is a weekly routine that I enjoy; even at the late hour here on the east coast. It's also the safest place for me to vent my frustrations as week to week I follow a team failing to play to its potential.
